I have advised you to use 5% 5-fluorouracil cream (Efudix) to treat areas of sun damaged skin.
Efudix is licensed to be used twice a day, every day, for between three to six weeks to treat areas of sun damage and some forms of superficial skin cancer. Used in this way it usually causes a very brisk local reaction which I want to avoid if at all possible.
I would like you to start by applying the cream sparingly to the areas to be treated just once a week for two weeks. Generally the amount required will be about the equivalent volume of a grain of rice for a cheek. A few people will get a reaction (redness and inflammation) even using it so infrequently and if this happens please stop using it and advise my office as we would need to reconsider the treatment programme.
Assuming there is no reaction please then use it twice a day on one day of the week and continue with this for three or four months. There is an excellent chance the areas will settle. You can then discontinue treatment.
Areas of sun damaged skin may continue to produce patches of crusting and scaling and the cream can be used in this way to treat them as required. If a growth is changing rapidly or you have concerns please contact my office.
I should be reviewing matters about four months after you commence treatment. Please liaise with my office to arrange a time.
