What does this treatment do?

Our aim when using botulinum toxin is to enhance natural beauty by softening the effects of facial movement and not to paralyse all movement. It is a purified protein derived from a bacterium called Clostridium Botulinum.

We are medical skin specialists with many years of experience in offering Botulinum injection and will always make a full medical assessment to ensure this treatment is suitable for you.

How does it work?

The toxin prevents the nerve control of muscle fibres. It blocks the nerve where the signal transmits to the muscle so the muscle no longer contracts. The effect develops over 3-4 days and persists for about four months whilst new nerves develop to bypass the block.

We also offer botulinum toxin injections to stop excessive sweating – hyperhidrosis. This a very effective treatment although the period for which the sweating is controlled varies from commonly around four months to up to a year in a lucky few. There are other treatment options which may be considered, and these would be discussed at the initial consultation.

Our experienced and trusted team of dermatologists, cosmetic doctors and aesthetic nurses have been highly trained and will be able to fine tune the placement of the injections to give a natural expression rather than a frozen look.

Frequently asked questions

What are Dermal fillers and how do they work?

Dermal Fillers are the ideal treatment for instantly enhancing your looks in a completely natural and non-surgical way. They work from inside by adding volume and gently smoothing out lines, folds and wrinkles. They help to restore your skin to its former youthful appearance.

There are a large number of Dermal Wrinkle Fillers on the market, which differ in content, molecular structure and duration. For example, Restylane and Juvederm Ultra are made from hyaluronic acid gel, a large molecule that provides part of the structural support of the skin.

What can dermal fillers treat?

Wrinkle Fillers come in different thicknesses, making it a very versatile product to treat very fine lines to deep wrinkles and folds.

These products are very effective in both men and women in helping to instantly soften:

  • lines around the lips (smoker’s lines),
  • the lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth (nasolabial lines)
  • smile lines on the cheeks
  • crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles.

They have been widely used to increase the size and volume of lips.

Thicker fillers can also be used to:

  • add volume to sunken cheeks and weak chins
  • reshape the tip of the nose
  • fill out deeper acne or other scars
  • help reduce the appearance of veins and tendons in aged hands with thin skin.

Different combinations of types of fillers are used in order to achieve the best results.

Are there any side effects?

Immediately after the treatment, some injection-related reactions may occur: e.g. redness, swelling, bruising and tenderness at the injection site. These typically settle down within a day or so, the lips taking up to a week to settle fully. Other types of reactions are rare.

Do Dermal Filler injections hurt?

The needles used for the treatment are very fine and most people describe the treatment akin to a few small sharp scratches. However, if you are concerned about this, we can prescribe some topical anaesthetic cream to apply on the skin before the treatment. This will help to numb the area, so the treatment would almost be pain-free.

How long does it last?

Hyaluronic acid fillers on average have a duration of 8 to 12 months but can last up to 18 months in some people.
