What does this treatment do?

Very often it is appropriate to adopt a wait and see policy as natural healing processes will often resolve many concerns but when necessary we can offer surgical scar revision for particularly deep, depressed or irregular scars.

We will often recommend a staged approach over a period of time where each stage will produce some improvement and together they will produce a worthwhile, sustained improvement. Our philosophy is to explain the treatments options in your case and help you to decide the best programme for you.

Acne usually gets better over a year or two, so the first line of treatment is to simply suppress the inflammation until the acne disappears.

Treatment might involve lotions or tablets such as antibiotics or hormone suppression in the form of a contraceptive pill (for females only). However, acne that is very disfiguring, scarring or long-standing is classed as severe, and often requires stronger treatment, there are drugs that offer a good chance of a fix for acne.

Laser treatment

A Laser is a high-energy beam of light that can transfer its energy into specific areas of the skin’s tissue to treat skin problems.

For acne treatment, lasers work by killing the bacteria, and reducing the production of sebum from the sebaceous glands in the skin.

Laser treatments are often used in conjunction with other approaches to enhance the results.

Medical microdermabrasion helps to improve the texture and appearance of skin using state-of-the-art technology to exfoliate, enhance and smooth the skin.

It gets rid of unwanted acne and scarring by using a stream of fine micro-particles to partially remove the outermost layer and stimulate new cell growth, resulting in a smoother and more youthful glow. It works on all skin types and shouldn’t cause any skin colour changes or scarring.

Not only does it work well for acne and acne scars, but it also reduces the appearance of wrinkles, age spots, sun damaged skin and stretch marks.

The side effects of microdermabrasion, such as redness and swelling, tend to be short-lived, but your skin may be dry and flaky for a few days after the procedure, and the suction may temporarily bruise your skin.

Normally, your skin is more sensitive to the sun afterwards and so you should avoid sun exposure for a few days and use sunscreen.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels are liquids brushed on to the face to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the growth of new cells.

There are three types of chemical peels that you can choose from: a superficial peel, a medium depth peel and a deep peel. They remove the outer layers of the skin but to variable depths to benefit an array of skin conditions.

The superficial peel is the mildest form of chemical peel treatment available. It’s helpful in reducing oiliness, unblocking pore, reducing blackheads and minimising acne breakouts. they are normally performed by our Aestheticians.

Medium chemical peels are performed by our qualified medical skin specialists and are effective in reducing the appearance of superficial acne scars, age spots, pigmentation and fine wrinkles.

We rarely offer Deep Peels due to the availability of other treatment options such as resurfacing lasers.

Medical Skin Needling such as Skin Pen and Dermaroller.

Some of our clinics offer medical Skin Needling treatment. This is usually more invasive than those offered in a beauty salon. These treatments can be used to improve the appearance of acne scars, as well as wrinkles, stretch marks, chicken pox scars and more.

By using sterile micro-needles to make a multitude of tiny puncture wounds, skin needling treatment stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin.

This will result in smoother, plumper and more youthful looking skin after the treatment is finished – whatever your skin type.

Fractional laser resurfacing

Laser resurfacing can also be used to treat acne scarring. For fractional laser resurfacing, we use a non-ablative laser that delivers small micro-beams to the skin.

It also has a positive effect on wrinkles, sun damage and other blemishes as well as acne scars.

With a small penetration to the skin, the laser will target problem areas by creating tiny columns of treated tissue amongst the healthy tissue.

IPL, or intense pulsed light, treats redness and thread veins which can often be associated with acne and acne rosacea.

IPLs work by producing a powerful light that destroys the bacteria that causes acne, as well as removing blood vessels that cause redness or thread veins. It’s a safe and non-invasive treatment.

This treatment can be effective in treating acne and acne scarring, for some patients it is unsuitable. As part of your consultation with one of our consultant dermatologists, the suitability of IPL (and all treatments) will be discussed with your specific situation in mind.

Frequently asked questions

What is acne?

Acne is a common condition characterised by blackheads, whiteheads and cysts. It affects the greasy and hair-bearing areas such as the face, chest and back. Acne is caused by a combination of overactive grease-glands, hormones and bacterial infection. As with most skin conditions, acne can affect one’s confidence and cause low self-esteem. It can leave scarring.

What does it look like?

A combination of blackheads, inflamed spots, cysts and pustules on the face, back and chest. Sometimes the scalp, armpits and groin can be affected.

How might it affect me?

Mild or moderate acne affects the confidence and mood. More severe acne might leave scarring which can be pit-like, crater-like or bumpy. To avoid scarring, it is vital to treat acne before this stage.

Which treatment is best for me?

Because every patient suffers acne and scarring differently, the best way to determine the most effective treatment is to meet with one of our consultant dermatologists. During this appointment, they can assess and diagnose your situation and offer you the best treatment.
